Chapter 13

“Jared says he ran into you today.” Selina sits on my couch, her legs crossed beneath her as she cradles a mug of freshly brewed coffee. There’s not an ounce of distrust in her voice and yet I still feel like it’s an accusation.

“Yep,” I answer tightly, avoiding her gaze.

“Did you talk for long?” A sly smile graces her lips. For some reason, she seems amused that I ran into Jared.

I shake my head. “Just while he waited for his coffee.”

I stand, straightening my dress as my feet slip into my ballet flats. “Do you need sugar?” I ask. “My coffee needs sugar.”

I turn and walk into the kitchen, not waiting for her answer.

“No, that stuff is poison,” she calls after me.

When I turn around, she’s there. Like a panther ready to pounce.

She watches me with interest. It doesn’t take a genius to work out something’s on my mind, but it’s whether or not she cares to ask that’s undetermined.

“Are you busy at work?” she asks.

I’m surprised that she brought up work. Usually, she doesn’t show an ounce of interest.

“Work’s been hectic. I’ve got an open gallery next week.”

“I know.” She shrugs her shoulders as if my life is irrelevant. “I’ll be in Paris.”

And just like that, my work, my life, is deemed irrelevant.

“I can’t wait for Paris.” She wraps her hands around her mug and brings it to her lips, inhaling before she takes a long gulp. She sits at the breakfast bench, her mind somewhere else.

“I know you’ll be in Paris,” I roll my eyes. “You always get this way before fashion week.”

She looks at me as if I’m crazy. “It’s not just the fashion, Savvy. It’s the country. It has such a distinct feeling about it. Once I get there, I feel like I’ve returned home.”

It crosses my mind that everything might be easier if Selina and Jared were to relocate to France, but in all seriousness, I can’t see Jared living that life. He needs his work. That’s what keeps him going.

“Is Jared going too?” I ask. He’s never gone with Selina to fashion week before, but maybe this year he’s looking to escape Seattle.

She shakes her head. “God, no. He hates Paris at this time of year.” She sighs dreamily. “I will live there one day, Savvy,” she says, her tone deadly serious. “With or without Jared.”

My mouth falls open. I didn’t expect those words to fall from her tongue. Selina is always blatantly honest, but not usually so brutal.

“I haven’t even started packing,” she drains the last of her coffee and places the mug on the bench. “I hate packing,” she whines.

I get it. It can be extremely frustrating knowing what coat to bring. The Chanel or the Balenciaga.

“Will you come over on Friday and help me choose my outfits?” she asks.

I manage to roll my eyes without her noticing. “Really?” I don’t even attempt to hide the lack of motivation I have for choosing Selina’s clothes as she travels halfway around the world.
